Prototype tested the 13/4/54 at Lindley, 1954 Le Mans tests 1954 test at Gaydon with Moss 1954 used at MlRA for BBC TV. Never raced; owned by Jaguar & send for many years to National Motor Museum. 1958 and 1966 Motor Geneva Shows; Can be seen in the showroom at Browns Lane ,owned by Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust England.

factory 1955 longnose ear; 24H Le Mans, Hawthorn/Bueb (# 6),1 OA; preparation for British GP meeting, Aintree, desist in practice, substituted by XKD 506; overhauled at factory & fitted vvith de Dion rear suspension; TT, Dundrod, desist during practice; used by factory for test; preparation for 1956 Easter Goodwood meeting but not raced; fitted with rear axle oil sump with 6 pints capacity; April, tested extensively by Hawthorn & Fairman, the latter accidenting car at Silverstone; 14/9/56 tested at Silverstone by Hawthorn & Bueb with independent rear suspension; 17/11/56 Dewis tested IRS; 2616/57 ditto, from Dewis's log. Car continued to be used for testing until June 1953; history then vague; it has been stated that parts of this car were used in a rebuild of XKD 601 and that there is no record of XKD 505 having been sold; however the list of Experimental cars states, 'XKD 505 BRG, sold'; early 80s frame stamped XKD 505 removed from XKD 504 during rebuild by Lynx and sold to the late Bill Lake, who had an authentic car built up around this frame wilh a real monocoque; sold to David Lomas. 2001 Rockingham Auction

Delivered to Jaguar Cars New York; fitted with Chevrolet Corvette V8 engine and sprouted large blister on bonnet; c1958-55 owned by Bob (or Bill) Fuller; reported to be much raced and accidented during its career; November 1958, Hammond Harvest races, unplaced after leading initially; 1973 D-type advertised in Autosport by Herb Wetson; purchased by Bob Wood (UK), found to consist of '`a completed, assembled but bastardised car'! acGording to later owner Stephen Curtis; it consisted of the XKD 560 frame (cut about to take V8 engine but otherwise original), 'D'steering rack' 'D' wishbones torsion bars, uprights, hubs. shock absorbers & anti-rollbar, Chevrolet engine & gearbox, rear suLframe & various suspension, but no axle, & the tail and bonnet in poor condition, plus intact XKD 523 frame ; most of the monocoque had been repiaced with a 'birdcage' type tubular structure ; 1978 assorted assembly sold to Stephen Curtis: dismantled by owner and sent to Lynx for rebuilding around a new monocoque; rebuilt with original-type disc brakes, wheels, gearbox, ZF diff & factory, wideangle 3.8 D-type engine from Norman Buckley's record-breaking boat, Miss l4/indem~ere, sold to USA; sold to Gavin Bain (Christchurch, New Zealand).

N° n/a Colour Unpainted On 1817/5S Service Dept instructed to remove engine & gearbox, and pass same to Comp Dept (this date coincided with the period when the badly-damaged XKC 403 was in the Comp Dept for repair; this fact, together with the knowledge that Jack Broadhead, owner of XKC 403, was charged the large amount of £1645, and that XKC 403 subsequently was more akin to a production car, led Andrew Whyte to reason that XKD 570 [or XKD 548] may have changed identily to XKC 403.

The car had never been repaired in any way. Nuts, bolts, hose clamps, tires, trim, hood, paint, bulbs, etc. were just as they were when 728 left the factory in 1957. There were many items that even he had never been able to find out about on other XKSSs. The car is remarkable and certainly the only untouched, original XKSS that we ever seen.

Heinl (Toledo) who stated that car was '`in perfect condition when I sold it", c1966 sold to Delavan Lee c1970 sold to Walter Hill (Florida), who stated in 1991: 'Restored several years ago to short-nose D-type configuration with all matching numbers and in good running condition. Re-restored fairly rerently to long-nose 19S7 Sebring fomm (copy of XKD 605), in all respects authentic in that form and specification, including early Lucas (Jaguar 1956/57) fuel injection, etc. Al1 XKSS 710 components, matching numbers, are saved. The body panels, engine, brakes and so on, as now installed, are new or old original Le Mans factory components, or original XKSS 710. Let me stress that this alteration was a pleasurable technical exercise done solely for my entertainment and interest, and is not mis-represented as a factory car. The engine is full race 3.8 by Martin Morris/Bryan Wills (Lakeham). Pl head etc by me. The block is not an early factory 3.8 block; it is a regular production'garden i variety'block altered as necessary to meet the 1957 factory Pl specs'.

Delivered to Jaguar Cars North America (despatched 1614/57); sold to James Peterson (Altadena, California); August 1957, San Fernando Drag Strip, FTD; Tom Groskritz, who was given a run in the car by Petersen, reports car next sold, in 1958, to radio & TV personality Bill Leyden (Beverly Hills), and that he "used to see that white car with its red interior frequently parked in a studio parking lot off Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. In the early'60s Bill sold the XKSS to rising actor Steve McQueen'- but the subsequent owner states that Peterson sold the car to McQueen in late 1958; McQueen painted car dark green to avoid attention; the seats were retrimmed in black leather by noted show and race car trimmer Tony Nancy, and the wheels were polished; aOtherwise,~ states Richard Freshman, ~il remained in stock condition throughout his ownership, 'terrorising'the local police and'midnight road race sports-car set' until October of 1967. McQueen made a sale of 'convenience'to the William Harrah Automobile Collection in Reno, Nevada, with the understanding it was to be displayed in the collection and would not be driven by anyone, nor sold. During the spring of 1976, McQueen approached Harrah's to re" purchase and was initially rebuffed. Finally, in February 1978, affer a lengthy legal exchange, he managed to re~ purchase the car for substantially more than his original sale price"; mileage then 26,273; aRer standing for 11 years, the brakes and other minor details were refurbished; 1984 auctioned following McQueen's death; sold to Richard Freshman, a triend and neighbour of McQueen's; mileage then 39,396; extensive mechanical overhaul then carried out by Lynx vvrth Freshman visiting every 6-8 weeks; 1992 mileage 41,200; Richard Freshman (Calibrnia, USA). 2000 Sold to the Peterson Museum USA
